Taznakhte
The market town in the Draa valley whose weekly souk is one of the most active primary rug markets in southern Morocco. The name refers to the place, not a tribe.
Taznakhte sits at approximately 1,500 metres altitude in the Draa valley, at the junction of routes connecting Ouarzazate, the Anti-Atlas, and the High Atlas. Its weekly market has functioned for generations as the primary point where weavers from surrounding villages bring their work for sale. The town is most associated with Zanafi striped flatweaves, though other flatweave types also circulate through the market.
The Taznakhte cooperative structure is well-developed relative to many Moroccan weaving regions, there are multiple formal cooperatives operating in and around the town, which means weavers have some organised access to materials, markets, and pricing support. This is a meaningful economic structure, distinct from the informal individual production that characterises some other Amazigh weaving traditions.
For buyers and sourcing professionals, Taznakhte is one of the few places in Morocco where a direct connection between production context and piece is relatively legible, you can trace a specific flatweave to a specific cooperative and, in many cases, to a specific community.
