Cooperative
A collective structure through which weavers sell their work jointly and access materials, markets, and fairer pricing. The word is used honestly in some contexts and as marketing in others.
Weaving cooperatives pool resources, materials, loom space, access to buyers, and distribute income among their members. The most active cooperative production centres in Morocco include Taznakhte (Zanafi flatweaves), Kenitra (various types), Ouarzazate province, and several High Atlas communities.
Cooperatives are a real and important economic structure. They provide weavers with more market access and pricing leverage than individual selling, and create a more stable production environment than purely informal domestic production. Both the ILO and various Moroccan government bodies have supported cooperative development as a strategy for rural economic resilience.
The problem is not the cooperative structure itself, it is the commercial narrative built around it. Many rug brands market cooperative-sourced pieces as if they were individually commissioned from specific named artisans, using the language of personal relationship and direct connection that implies a very different supply chain than the reality. A rug woven within a cooperative structure and bought from the cooperative's stock at the weekly market is not the same as a rug commissioned from and made by a specific named weaver who was paid directly for that piece. Both are legitimate. They are not the same thing.
At Tilwen, sourcing is described accurately: pieces acquired directly from known households or individual weavers are described as such. Pieces acquired through market or cooperative channels are described as such. The distinction matters to provenance and price.
