Provenance

Where the piece came from, and the chain of custody that brought it here. Stated to the extent the evidence reaches, and no further.

Definition

Provenance in the rug world refers to the documented history of where a piece came from and how it passed through hands before reaching its current owner. Strong provenance includes: the weaving community or household of origin, the approximate date of making, the chain of ownership, and any relevant historical context.

For most vintage Moroccan Amazigh rugs, provenance is partial at best, the oral tradition of sourcing, visual attribution, and market knowledge rather than a paper trail. What matters is honesty about what is known and what is inferred.

Provenance at Tilwen is stated as specifically as the evidence supports. "Sourced from a family in Ait Benhaddou, 2024" means what it says, a direct acquisition with a traceable source household. "Acquired from a collector in Fes, 2024" means a secondary market acquisition with a known but not primary source.

Why it matters for buying
Provenance documentation is what distinguishes a rug you know from a rug you assume. At the price level of pieces in this gallery, clear provenance is both a trust signal and a genuine commercial value.
