Zemmour
An Amazigh tribal confederation of the Middle Atlas plateau near Khemisset, whose pile-knotted rugs are among the most technically precise in Morocco, and whose wedding blanket tradition is the most biographically loaded.
The Zemmour are an Amazigh tribal confederation whose traditional territory spans the Khemisset and Tiflet areas of the Middle Atlas-Plateau region north of Rabat. Their weaving tradition, while less internationally famous than Beni Ourain, is considered by specialists to be among the technically finest in Morocco, characterised by dense, complex geometric compositions in deep red, ivory, and dark brown, with compositional precision that reflects a highly developed formal vocabulary.
Zemmour compositions typically feature all-over geometric fields, interlocking lozenges, diamond grids, and stepped forms, worked at a fineness that allows more intricate patterning than the bolder High Atlas traditions. The deep red palette associated with Zemmour work comes from madder and, in later pieces, from synthetic red dyes.
The handira wedding blanket tradition is strongly associated with Zemmour communities, many of the most sought-after vintage handiras come from this region. The combination of technical sophistication and ceremonial significance makes Zemmour pieces particularly interesting to serious collectors.
In the commercial market, Zemmour attribution is relatively rare and more reliable than Beni Ourain attribution, there is less commercial incentive to misattribute to Zemmour since the name has lower recognition. Pieces that arrive with a credible Zemmour attribution are worth taking seriously.
