Pile Height

The length of the pile above the foundation. At Tilwen: Flat (no pile), Low (under 8mm), Medium (8–15mm), High (over 15mm).

Pile height directly affects how a rug feels underfoot, its acoustic properties, and how it reads visually at different distances.

FlatNo pile, a flatweave kilim. Reads as two-dimensional and graphic. Hard underfoot. Best for hard floors and high-traffic areas. Pattern reads equally at all distances.

Low (3–8mm)Lies closer to the warp, creating a firm surface. Pattern reads clearly. Good for dining rooms and spaces with furniture.

Medium (8–15mm)Warm underfoot without high-pile maintenance requirements. Pattern reads with some depth.

High (15mm+)Deep and soft underfoot, classic Beni Ourain register. Significant acoustic dampening. Should not be permanently compressed under heavy furniture. Pattern may read less sharply at distance.

Pile height is one of the first things to know when choosing a rug for a specific room. A high-pile rug in a dining room under a table is a maintenance problem; a flatweave in a bedroom where you want warmth underfoot is the wrong register. The spatial notes on each Tilwen piece address this directly.
