Where to Put a Beni Ourain

A Beni Ourain is mostly empty on purpose. The first rule of placing one is the one most guides get backwards: don't bury it.

A Beni Ourain is mostly empty on purpose. A wide pale field, a few dark marks, and a lot of quiet space between them. So the first rule of placing one is the one most guides get backwards: don't bury it.

The usual advice is go big, cover the floor. But if furniture sits on most of the rug, you've hidden the very thing that makes it beautiful, the open field. Leave enough of it showing to breathe.

That said, a rug can't float either. The most common mistake in any room is the postage stamp: a rug too small, marooned in front of the sofa with everything around it on bare floor. It makes the whole room look unmoored.

The fix is simple. Get the front legs of your sofa and chairs onto the rug. That's the whole trick, it ties the furniture and the floor into one group. Front legs on, at minimum. Back legs can stay off. Just keep it consistent: if the sofa's front legs are on, the chairs' should be too.

And leave a margin. The rug shouldn't run to the walls. A border of bare floor all around, a foot or so, frames it the way a mat frames a picture.

In the bedroom, run it out past the bed on both sides and the foot, far enough that your feet land on wool when you get up, not cold floor. A rug that stops at the edge of the bed frame does nothing for you at 6am.

One place not to put it: under the dining table. A Beni Ourain is deep, plush pile. Chairs catch and wobble on it, and every crumb disappears into it forever. Save the deep pile for where you want softness, the living room, the bedroom, a reading corner. For under the table, you want a flatweave.

The short version: let the field breathe, get the front legs on, leave a margin, keep your feet warm, keep it away from dinner. The rug was made to be looked at as much as walked on. Place it so you can still see it.
