Vintage or New: How to Know

There's nothing wrong with a new rug. The trouble starts when a new one is dressed up as an old one and priced like it.

So here's how to tell them apart, and it comes down to one idea: real age is uneven. A rug that actually lived a few decades wore out unevenly, because people don't walk on a rug evenly.

Look at where the pile is worn. On a genuinely old rug, the middle is lower, rubbed down by years of feet crossing the same path. The edges stay fuller. Under where a chest or a bed once sat, the pile is taller still. The wear tells you where a life happened on it.

Now the fake. A rug aged in a factory, with a chemical wash or a distressing machine, wears out evenly, corner to corner, the same everywhere. That's the giveaway. No one ever walked every inch of a rug the same amount. Even wear is the one thing real life can't produce.

Turn it over. A truly old rug is soft and floppy in the hand, the back broken in like an old jacket. A new rug that's been tea-washed or chemically treated to look old feels stiff, even a little brittle, because the treatment cooks the foundation. Old is supple. Faked-old is stiff.

Part the pile and look down a single strand. Real colour runs top to base with a gentle shift. A bleached fake shows a hard line partway down the fibre, bright at the root where the chemical never reached. That band is a confession.

And a word on the word itself. Vintage usually means twenty to a hundred years old. Antique means a hundred plus. Under twenty and it's just new, whatever the label says. So if a rug looks flawlessly, evenly aged and costs about what a new one costs, trust that. It probably is one.

None of this is against new rugs. A new hand-knotted rug is a fine thing to own, honestly sold as what it is. The only rug worth avoiding is the one lying about its age.
